Aromatherapy Massage for Pregnancy
Pregnancy brings many changes: physically, psychologically and socially. Nurturing care during pregnancy, birth and as a new mum provides benefits for mum and baby.
Aromatherapy can be combined with massage to support the changing body during pregnancy, and may help to ease many discomforts such as:
Muscular tension, backache and pelvic pain
Swelling, carpal tunnel, leg cramps
Nausea and heartburn
Insomnia, depression & anxiety
One study done by The Touch Research Institute showed a reduction in anxiety, stress hormones and obstetrical complications in women who received regular massage during their pregnancies. *
Aromatherapy and massage are also valuable to prepare for and use during childbirth. Fear, anxiety and stress can have a negative impact on the commencement and progress of labour. Odour has a direct pathway to the area of the brain that governs fear and research shows the use of positive aromas can help to reduce pain perception.
Longer appointment times are preferred during pregnancy to allow for consultation and a personalised nurturing treatment supportive of the many changes during this time. Sonya uses a combination of essential oils and massage specific to your needs.
Birth preparation/ “induction” treatments: if you have not had a prior treatment with Sonya during your pregnancy a 90 min appointment time is preferable.

Massage FAQ’s
-
The majority of basic essential oils that are readily available are safe to use. Often it is more about the method of application and dosages used. It is best to contact a qualified aromatherapist before using essential oils during pregnancy. No. You can have a massage at any stage throughout your pregnancy. A qualified pregnancy massage therapist will adjust positioning and treatment techniques according to your stage of pregnancy and any discomforts you are experiencing.
-
Massage can take place as soon after birth as the mother is comfortable. The decision on when to have a treatment often depends on:
The type of birth experienced
Postnatal recovery
Breastfeeding experience
Support available
Familiarity with the practitioner
Aromatherapy massage treatments during the early postnatal period will take all these factors into account; positioning and massage techniques vary accordingly.

Babies can receive massage from the moment they are born, provided correct techniques are being used. Baby massage techniques can be utilised up until teenage years (and beyond) so there is really no age limit. The “right” time to learn baby massage will often depend on the parents. Some parents are keen to learn straight away; others prefer to take a few months to settle into their new roles first before learning something new.
