Internal Pelvic Release Work
Internal Pelvic Release is a powerful opportunity for women to reconnect with their bodies, release stored tension, and cultivate a greater sense of well-being.
What is Internal Pelvic Release Work?
Internal Pelvic Release Work (IPRW) is a holistic approach that focuses on relieving tension in the pelvic area, enhancing pelvic floor function, and promoting overall well-being. This method combines gentle yet deliberate internal release techniques with external bodywork, recognising the interconnectedness of the body. By addressing both soft tissues and ligaments that support the bladder, bowel, and reproductive organs, IPRW aims to create space and comfort within the soft tissues of the pelvis commonly referred to as the ‘soft pelvis’ as opposed to the bony pelvis, helping you reconnect with your body.
Women have the unique opportunity to gain access to the internal muscles of the pelvis via the vagina, and similar to all areas of the body, it can be a place where we hold tension. With gentle hands and intention, using the vagina as the point of entry, tension can be identified and the muscles of the pelvis can then be invited to release and thus creating space and comfort. Women are usually only familiar with vaginal examinations that explore the top wall – as in a cervix check when in labour or for a pap smear.
The vagina has a back wall through which contact can be made with the soft tissue connections that provide stabilisation to the bones and to the organs.
It’s through the back wall of the vagina that we can use tender touch and directed breathing to free tension in the ligaments and muscles and fascia.
Who would benefit from IPRW?
Tension within the soft pelvis can arise from various sources including injuries, postural habits, trauma, surgeries, and lifestyle choices. This tension can restrict movement, flow, and overall comfort, and can often hold onto emotions and memories. Therefore, IPRW is beneficial for a wide range of women, including those who:
Are preparing for birth: This work can help ease tension and promote relaxation and space with the soft pelvis in the lead up to labour.
Are healing from childbirth: Women navigating the recovery process may find significant relief through IPRW
Want to understand why they ‘couldn’t birth’ their baby vaginally.
Who have been harmed by another
Have painful scars: Whether from childbirth or surgery, gentle techniques can improve the healing of scars.
Experience pelvic pain, painful/no sex: Those facing conditions like vaginismus, vulvodynia, deep hip pain, or painful periods.
Have pelvic floor concerns: If you're dealing with issues like incontinence or prolapse or have been told you have an overactive or hypertonic pelvic floor.
Are curious about their pelvic health: Women looking to deepen their understanding of their bodies and enhance their well-being will find value in this work.
What to expect from an IPRW session?
A typical 2-hour session, includes:
Personal History Discussion: We’ll begin by understanding your unique story, including any birth experiences, and identifying your goals for the session.
Assessment: We’ll assess your posture and pelvic alignment, as well as any musculoskeletal injuries, since pelvic issues often relate to the whole body.
External Bodywork and Rebalancing: You’ll experience gentle external bodywork aimed at rebalancing the pelvic area, preparing you for deeper internal release work.
Informed Consent: Given the sensitive nature of internal work, we will discuss and ensure you feel fully informed and comfortable.
Internal Pelvic Release Work: an exploration and gentle release of tension in the soft tissue connections – ligaments, muscles, fascia – felt through the back wall of the vagina
Homework Guidance: We’ll conclude with time for you to learn exercises that support either birth preparation or overall pelvic health, providing you with tools to continue your journey at home.
